Civil Engineer

Civil Engineer is a person who practices civil engineering which is a professional engineering descipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally build environment, including public works like bridges, airports, canals, pipelines, roads, dams, sewage system, structural components of railways and building. They works in all aspects of planning, designing, and constructing or in repairement of building or infrastructure projects to ensure that structures and system are assembled correctly. Depending on the demand of the job, they may get involved in a project from start to finish or for certain stages of it.

Geotechnical Engineering also known as geotechnics, is the sub-discipline of civil engineering which is concerned with the engineering behaviour of natural geological materials. It uses the principals of soil mechanics and earth mechanics to solve its engineering problems. Geotechinacal engineers investigate and determine the properties of subsurface conditions and materials. They also involved in the planning and execution of earthworkIt includes,without being limited to, the analysis, design and construction of foundation, slopes, roadways, tunnels, retaining structures, landfills, embankments, levees, wharves, landfills and other systems that are either made of or are supported by soil or rock.

They are seeking to involve Experienced Geotechnical Engineers (Civil Engineer), with ample experience in site investigation, to join our Geotech Team in Cape Town and Pretoria. In this role , you’ll getting out on the fields, for conducting geotechnical site investigations, testing, data logging, and preparing technical reports while teaming up with internal stakeholders across multiple disciplines including tunnels, roads, rail, dams and hydropower, supporting other streams in the delivery of high standard designs, verification and onsite supervision.

Responsibilities – Geotechnical Engineer

The job role of a Geo-technical Engineer involves the following responsibilities/duties , but are not limited to, are:

  • Carrying out detailed design of high standards and tight timeframes for projects of reasonable complexity.
  • Assisting other senior engineers with the analysis of information, production of designs and computations.
  • Communicating with other team members and stakeholders regularly and openly.
  • Producing documentation reports, proposals and specifications to meet client requirements for projects of reasonable cmplexity.
  • Advising on required procedures  and suitability of construction materials.
  • Identifying sources of advice for design proposals with non-standard engineering requirements.
  • Cooperate with other design desciplines to develop and maintain design coordination.
  • Applying a deeper understanding of Engineering principles to devise and deliver new approaches in order to solve more complex problems.
  • Assisting in identifying Statutory responsibilties, professional risks hazards and liabilities.
  • Through a multi-descipline approach, identifying opportunities for improvement and more efficiency in work.
  • Supporting other streams in delivery of high standards designs, verifications and onsite supervision.
  • Supervision of drawing production for assigned tasks is undertaken in accordance with SMEC procedures as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with clients and appropriate stakeholders to ascertain information required to undertake design and documentation tasks.
  • Adhering to the document management process.
  • Undertaking self-checking and review of own design outputs against requirements and making corrections and improvements identified.
  • In order to complete task on time, manage time efficency.
  • Carrying out design tasks as directed to meet agreed outcomes and cost structure.and many more………….

Qualifications & Experience :

  1. BEng/BSc (Engineering) essential: MEng/MSc (Engineering) beneficial from an accredited/certified university.
  2. Relevant Professional Registration is indispensable.
  3. Computer literacy with proficiency in a variety of computer programs.
  4. An undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, such as:
    – Geological engineering
    – Geology
    – Geotechnology
    – Geophysics
    – Mineral or mining engineering
  5. Minimum 6 years of professional Experience.
